I thank my late Dad for introducing me to the love of wine. I actually rate wine to be better value than that of Champagne, but that's a personal thing. Price for price, a bottle of estate bottled a Grand Cru Clos de Vougeot 2007 has deeper satisfaction than a similarly-priced bottle of Krug Brut.
My recent purchase were 12 bottles of Vina del Portillo Senoria de Sarria Reserva 2002 from the Navarra region, was one of my best buys.
I love dessert "pudding" wines, and these are probs best drank in the winter months at around Christmas time. My travels take me past vineyards, even down in the Languedoc-Roussillon district, and all it takes is a visit to a proprietor for a wine tasting. For this is a wonderfully opportunist way of getting to taste wines before one buys them.
If you are serious about drinking wine and keeping a few bottles stored at home, I recommend a good wine merchant. Like Berry Bros & Rudd. Visit one of their tasting sessions, and go from there.
