Default Are you ready to change your life?

I am through with sitting around so much. I have a garden and a dog I love to be with outdoors.

Anyone else? What to change your life style?

I have to due to a relatively recent diagnosis of Type II diabetes.

As the relative of someone who has had it for several years, take it from me. The diet and life style change are much less painful the advanced problems down the road that you may be able to prevent or at least slow down. Good luck with this.

Thanks.

My father had it since roughly 1976 (he died in 2001) so I'm rather familiar with the disease, too.

What p!ssed me off royally was that I called my older brother about my diagnosis back in March, and he told me that he was diagnosed with it, too. Last December!

Making my life more difficult is the fact that I'm also an ovo-lacto-vegetarian, with only sporadic visits to the fish venue.

Sorry to hear that, Phyllis. My father had it too, so I have good chances to get it later.

Did you receive drugs treatement or insulin ?

I take pills: Metformin (sp) and simvastatin.

Anyway, since you know it's in your family history, you'll be better able to work with your family doctor to postpone or even avoid it completely.

As long as you are on meds is not so bad. Unfortunately, the meds are not enough. Exercise and diet are important to keep it under control.

My father didn't care much about diet and exercice, so he ended on insuline.

I did the test last year, but for the moment I am not in danger. And as I hate injections, I prefer exercises & diet.

I know. My late father started out on an "old" medication (diabinase I think it was called/spelled), but ended up going on insulin roughly eight years before he passed away.

I have been relatively good with my diet and I do a lot of dancing (you should see me Saturday nights, radio tuned in on a disco/funk/"dance" show.) I've also bookmarked several tunes on YouTube that I use to exercise (first of all, they have rather catchy beats, second, you can figure out how long you've exercised because they all have the length listed.) Oh, and I sign up for dance classes each semester to get an extra dose of exercise.

Tack onto that a seven week old kitten and a good old-fashioned carrot-and-stick* program, and I'm kinda good to go.

* - Carrot = cute kitten/guy photos, stick = remembering what my father and a former professor went through (I saw my dad's health decline severely firsthand, and the professor had a major heart attack that left him comatose for six months [he almost had a heart transplant, but the doctors refused to do it because of his age and his diabetes, so he had sextuple bypass surgery instead].)
