European researchers say eating milk chocolate, which is most commonly used in candy bars, does not raise antioxidant levels in the bloodstream. They found the same discouraging result among patients who drank milk while eating dark chocolate.
The results suggest that milk and other dairy products somehow discourage the body's ability to absorb the protective compounds in chocolate. Only subjects who ate dark chocolate showed a temporary increase in their antioxidant levels.
Okay - I'm moving on to a strictly dark chocolate diet now.
I used to eat baker's chocolate which is unsweetened and has no milk in it...maybe that is why I had a pretty healthy childhood. C is for chocolate, that's good enough for me...(sorry, Sesame Street flashbacks!)
Okay, why is it that everything that supposedly has all these great health benefits are foods that I cannot eat? I'm allergic to a lot of fruits, can't eat quite a few vegetables because they do weird things to my digestive system, can't drink a glass of wine because grapes are one of the things I'm allergic to. Great.
