The greetimg "Merry Christmas" generally means "Have a Merry Christmas" which implies it is to happen in the near future. Unless it is just past Christmas, in which case it implies "I hope you had a Merry Christmas." Unless it is July, in which case it means the speaker was probably drunk. English is such a wonderfully flexible tongue.
