Re: Are tattoos art
I'm not sure tattoo can be considered as art, at least not yet.

Re: Are tattoos art
It depends. If you're talking about real tattoos, I'd say yes. The put-on's that you get in the cereal box that lasts like a whole day isn't. :P

Re: Are tattoos art
I think that some tattoos are artistic, some aren't - if you get one that's a cookie-cutter thing pointed out off the wall of the tattoo shop then that's not art, but if you design one, or get one made up specially for you, then it is an expression of who you are, and that's a big part of what art is.

Re: Are tattoos art
All right, maybe I'm old fashioned. What's to point to have a tattoo, even a very beautiful one, if nobody except yourself and maybe a closer friend can admire it ?

Re: Are tattoos art
According to my children, tatoos are art. They all have them. They are usually designed by one of them, and are quite beautiful. My daughter has angel wings with a cross in the center, between her shoulder blades. It was designed by her brother.
Sometimes, though, they are more emblematic than artistic, like a coat of arms.

Re: Are tattoos art
I don't really think tattoos are art. Yes, some of them are beautiful, but I'm one of these infuriating people who likes to see art on a canvas.
Still, if you were to design one yourself, I'm sure it would be your own personal piece of art.

Re: Are tattoos art
If they're beautiful or thought-provoking, they're art. Not everything that's painted on canvas is art either...

Re: Are tattoos art
Art has grown to have a wider definition now. Almost anything can be considered art, depending on who views it. I think it is art, not just because I am the owner of a piece, but because it comes from someone's imagination, which is the core definition of art. It has been created from someone's mind and physically creating it.
and then you have those who just choose from the flash and can't come up with their own...then I think it's plagiarism, if you ask me!
