Default changes to smoking legislation - uk

as of next year two important new laws are comming into effect here, in the uk, regarding smoking. firstly there will be no smoking in public places (this is taken to mean pubs, resturants, clubs etc...) and the legal age to purchace cigs will be extended from sixteen to eighteen. personaly, as someone desperate to quite, i think it's a step in the right direction, but will it have the desired effect?

Those laws were approved in Canada a few months ago. The proprios of restos & bars protested before and after the entry of the new law. They lost the battle and probably their bussiness. It must be frustrating for those who don't want to quit smoking, too.

Alexa, "proprios" is French slang for owners.
As for me, I don't approve these laws (we've got the same in France since yesterday). Either smoking is legal and every adult should be able to smoke where they want, except for immediat danger reason (no smoking in a gas station, or in hospital for instance), or it's illegal and it should be banned everywhere : public and private place.

It has worked well Ireland(eire) for the past two years or so.
and it was introduced in Scotland last year I did notice the difference in a small low ceiling pub I go into when visiting home, and the folk behind the bar said they preferred it, no smell when they come downstairs in the morning.

There are many places here in the US where people are still able to smoke. I really wish that smoking was not allowed.

It does bother me if people are too close. It can affect my asthma and allergies.
