Ansari, the first woman tourist in space
Anousheh Ansari, the chairwoman of Ansari company (her family runs it) will become the first woman tourist in space on Sept. 14 joining a russian crew on a mission on international space station. For those who remember the X price contest, this company is one of the sponsors.

"This is a dream that I've longed for since childhood," Ansari said. "I'm fascinated by the mystery and beauty of the cosmos. I deeply believe that the long-term survival of the human race will largely depend on our achievements in space exploration."

She's right but I fear that we won't progress very far until someone finds a way to make big money in space.

Or unless, they need another planet to replace our current used one.

I still hope it's not too late to save Earth. After all this old planet saw a lot of strange things during thousands of years.

Re: Ansari, the first woman tourist in space
Scientific advancement, things that we once saw as scince fiction come true only if someonne can make a big profit. Cell phones were Science Fiction when I was a child (and I was once). Cell phones are a big seller that you have to pay a fee to use. When they can send you to Mars at a cost you can afford and somebody is making a big profit on, you have your chance.

Re: Ansari, the first woman tourist in space
as for making money from space, i'm sure there are resoources that we can capitalise on on asteroids/moons/planets etc... but until we find a fast, cheap, reliable and renewable (fuel wise) method of travel, i'm don't know how ecconomically viable it would be.

But it's gotta be more profitable than oil, "dot com", and wireless technology. It has to have a big market and guaranteed return on investment. Then we'll colonize. (Sorry for the cynicism. I've been wait for a good space program since Sputnik.
