Default MP3 generation

yes, sad little me has joined the mp3 revolution, through my mother. we have our first mp3 player and i'm setting it up right now. i've got music on cd that i'm going to put on, but mother is now pushing the envelope and asking about downloading music. i've been referred to several file sharing web adresses, but in honesty i'm a bit of a chicken and don't want to do anything illegal. therefore, i'm asking, is it legal to use file sharing sites? and is there any LEGAL free music sites on the net? (appart from george michael who i don't like)

I suspect you are about 4 or 5 years too late for a good free haul. Some of the download subscription sites have a free trial where the music quits working after the trail if you don't subscribe. I personally rip my own CDs into MP3s and use them in the device I want. (I don't think they can make you buy it twice) A lot of newer computers come with CD Riper programs.

I'm afraid I'm still a chicken and didn't join the MP3 generation yet.

that is what i am doing, my problem is that mother wants certain music not currently in my collection. i have a cd burner, and use nero smartsuite, but the reason i'm asking about downloading is that she wants some odd stuff and wants me to find it online and then download for her.

Many legal ways to get music. Since you're in UK, try for OD2 or iTunes music store. MSN also sells music. Most titles are sold 0,99 cents.
And a legal and FREE website to get music :

I'm getting a Cowon A2 next week...it is a portable media player but it will be my first mp3 player...as I don't consider my cell phone one although it is one.
