It's from Luxembourg - same guys behind it than behind Kazaa. I use it but not as an IM system - Yahoo is fine for me. I use it as a phone system to call family and friends for cheap overseas. Phone call from computers to computers are free, phone calls from your computer to fixed lines or mobile cells are cheaper than any concurrent systems. But without a microphone, communication can be full of parasites.
When I was in Korea, made phone calls back home all week long for less than 1,50 € + Internet connection which can be free when you've found a WiFi hotspot.

We have two big wolfs for the internet: sympatico and videotron. the first one is more expensive and I ended the contract with them in December. Unfortunately as long as we don't have more companies on the market, they'll keep the prices up.

So, you don't need Skype at home. Neither do I, here connection are cheap and comprise free phone calls too (for about 32 USD per month) to France and Italy. And TV too, but the quality is not so good.
Skype, on the other side could be interesting for you Alexa to call your family in Romania, and I think they have an agreement to get free calls from anywhere in North america to anywhere in North America.

I'll check. I had another company only for international. When I had changed for videotron they couldn't pass of videotron's filter. Lot of bureacrasy and monopol.

If you can use regular messenging software (as yahoo messenger or MSN) you can use Skype.
Note, some phone can be connected to the PC for easier use of the soft.

SkypeOut is the name of the software part to install to call regular phones - mobiles or fixed lines. However I suggest you to at least buy a mic for your computer before calling someone.
