Human traffic
I saw a documentary about the human traffic from Moldavia and Ukraine last night. One of the women (mother, married and pregnant) went in Turkey with a guy she knew to find cheap things to buy. The guy sold her for $ 100 !!! Her husband tried desperately go get her back. The pimp finally let her go after several months. The guy who sold her got only 5 years of prison. And this story is one with a happy end. Another one gets back at home after a police raid. As her family was really poor and her brother needed an operation, she went back to Turkey, this time to prostitute for herself. It seems human traffic is regular in Moldavia and Ukraine. And unfortunately, not only there.
Moral: human life worths almost nothing.
Why nobody stops this traffic ? I mean severe mesures should be taken all over the world to stop it and those pimps should have at least 100 years of prison.

Re: Human traffic
Dearest alexa, the problem is similar as illegal drugs: if there's a demand, there's going to be a supplier (too bad my Ukrainian professor/friend is back in Moscow or he'd be more than willing to discuss this entire thing through the perspective of post-Soviet Union politics/economics/etc.)

Re: Human traffic
In other words, prostitution should be everywhere legal in order to stop the traffic ?

Re: Human traffic
No, that's not what I'm saying. What I'm saying is that no matter whether or not it's legal, there's always going to be a demand. Besides, if there is a need for some form of income and not enough jobs for a particular group, the people who need the income are going to find something (even if it is selling his/her body.)
I wish Yuri was here so he could explain far better than I am.

The problem is not prostitution as such - people can have sex as they please even with money as the counter-part. The problem is proxenetism - another word for slavery as it consists into forcing someone into an activity without leaving any choice.
And unfortunatly, as long as there's a request, there'll be offers. More strict immigration control, but also legalizing and considering prostitution as any other job, could be ways to decrease human traffics. But I higly doubt the problem can be solved over night.

Re: Human traffic
Overnight no, but serious punishements could help, too. If they get only 5 years and on probation for the first attempt selling other people (women and children), we'll never get rid of them.
That's another thing on my mind. what the hell is happening with the juridical systeme all over the world ? It looks to me, they don't want to change easily their stupid laws !

Re: Human traffic
alexa,
As long as there is an exchange of money/services (aka bribes), there're going to be people making/overlooking laws concerning human trafficking.

Re: Human traffic
What do you say about smart and unfearful international rangers to take care of them ? Kinda of dead or alive, I am the law ?
