If the the lake is warm enough, the moisture from the lake stirs up in the atmosphere, and since the air is cold, you get these big chunks of snow. And, it's really nasty, because it's produced in large amounts. Because of the combination of the moisture and the cold air, you get the Lake Effect Snow. By January, usually, you won't get Lake Effect Snow, since the lake is pretty much cooled or frozen over. Four places on the planet have it. The Great Lakes region is one of them. I think one is Salt Lake City, somewhere in Japan and somewhere in Russia. I forget though.
