Are we all avoiding the news?
Come on kids. There must be something going on in the world.
Or are you all doing what I am and mostly avoiding the news because there has been so much depressing stuff (that's a technical term, you know ) going on recently.
So...how often do you all read or watch or listen to the news? Every day? A few times a week? Once a week? Less than that?
And, what is going on in your part of the world? Anything interesting?

Re: Are we all avoiding the news?
We have only boring stuff in my part of the worlds, i.e politics.
I generally avoid news because of the crime issues. It's so depressing finding out about a husband killing his wife and his children or the mother killing his own children, viols, accidents. If in the pre-news there is nothing interesting to going on, I don't watch them. The annoying part is when you know exactly what you want to see and you have to wait till the end of news.

Re: Are we all avoiding the news?
i hae some fascinating statistics for y'all
but very sad ones at that. sigh.
1% of the population control a quater of the wealth
average age for pregnancy is 30
there is an 11 year gap in the life expectancy between rich and poor
in other words, not watcching the news, to busy with work at the moment
i'm horribly uninformed

Re: Are we all avoiding the news?
Well, you know what they say, don't you? There are lies, then there are damn lies, and then there are statistics. I see statistics something like I see the Bible...you can make both of them support any theory you want if you try hard enough.
Actually I don't think politics is that boring, Alexa. I hate politics...purely hate it. But I also find it endlessly fascinating, from an anthropological/sociological point of view. It's amazing how readily some people will lie, cheat, and steal just to gain a little bit of power. There's a little riddle we have here in the states: How do you know when a politician is lying? His lips are moving. Sad to say, that's pretty close to the truth most of the time. Maybe all of the time. I also think that even when it is boring, somebody has to keep an eye on the jerks, or they'll get away with even more than they do already.

Re: Are we all avoiding the news?
LMA, I'm too busy writing the news than commenting them. And yes, this week-end I've actively avoided news all together : didn't open a paper nor switched the TV or the radio on.

Re: Are we all avoiding the news?
Ah, a nice, quiet weekend. Those are so nice, aren't they? I find myself actively avoiding the news on weekends, as well.
But the evening news is on in the background now, even as I type this. I'm trying not to listen.

Re: Are we all avoiding the news?
Morning news on radio. And bad news about oil, central heating and pollutions. And avian flu coming to Europe.

Re: Are we all avoiding the news?
I don't actively avoid the news, I regularly hear bits on the radio, encounter headlines while perusing the more interesting bits of various newspapers, but I don't actively read it either.
Regular news depresses me. I can't watch it or read it. I can read scientific news, nature news, humorous spins on political foibles and whatnot - but hard news is something I just can't take.
I can't watch Forensic Files or Cold Case Files or Criminal Masterminds anymore either. The husband loves them but to me they are just rolling over the rock to expose the nasty little cockroaches hiding underneath. They give me nightmares, stomach upset and headaches. I know there are nasty people out there but I don't want to know all of their intimate details.
Give me fantasy, music, movies and funny stories and I'm much happier.
