Artists by Art Movemement
My favorite art movement is The Renaissance. I tried to understand the other movements, but no chance to get the message from abstract paintings.
Do you have a favorite art movement ? A favorite artist ? Which one ? Why ?
I'm without words whenever I see a Michelangelo painting.

Re: Artists by Art Movemement
Michelangelo is by far my favorite artist, and the Renaissance my favorite period. Although I heard a lecture at the National Museum in London when I was there once that put Michelangelo, espeically his later works, in Mannerism rather than in the Renaissance tradition. Whatever, his work just seems to speak to me.
But I like other art, although I've had to really work at like some of the more modern stuff, and I like more representational work better than I like abstract things. Atlhough in an art history class I took once, the teacher made a good argument that abstract art is representational, just in a different way. I wish I still had the notes from that class so I could discuss her points in more detail. It was a good class; I got an appreciation for Picasso there, which I never really had before.

Re: Artists by Art Movemement
Sure abstract art is representational - it represents what the artist is feeling or thinking, or not feeling or thinking, whichever happens to be the case.* The problem with it is that the viewer cannot know what the artist is representing without having some sort of insight into the mind of the artist.* After that, it is only appreciation for form and color.* Never been a big fan of modern art - that is to say of the kind that isn't specifically representing some form of something we can understand as an unknowing witness.*
I've always been fond of David, Rembrandt and Vermeer.* I think that mostly the vibrancy of their representations, the contemplative stillness of most of their subjects seems to speak to me.* Almost bring me to that quiet peaceful place where you can just contemplate - without interruptions.* Here are some of my favorites: (Velasquez is the artist I forgot to mention above - his is the bridesmaids painting)

Re: Artists by Art Movemement
It's tough since I'm an artist but I guess my favorite movement is Dadaism, followed by surrealism, nouveau, deco and pop art.
Favorite artists are Dali, Warhol, Lichtenstein, Picasso, Mucha, Aubrey Beardsley, Alexander Calder, Jackson Pollock, Jasper Johns, Frank Llyod Wright, Tiffany, just to name a few!

Re: Artists by Art Movemement
In my view, and others that I've talked with: Abstract art is representational, just distorted or "abstracted." Expressionism may be representational, but usually isn't. Art that isn't a picture "of" something is generally considered to be nonrepresentational.
Favorites: Dali, Vermeer, Picasso, Turner
