Re: what is your pet worth
You know, I understand about loving one's animals. I've had animals that I've loved. But I think this woman has kind of gone off the deep end about the matter. If she had the money, that would be one thing, I suppose, but taking out a second mortgage on her house is just a little extreme, in my opinion.
It is a pretty dog, though, judging from the picture in the link.

I agree with LMA, remortgage their home, sell their wedding ring it's an extreme decision for an 15 years old dog, not to say irrational. What if the dog was killed by accident ?

I like labs, too. Most of the labs I have known have been lovely dogs, temperamentally speaking. Although given a choice, I'd choose a German shepherd over any other dog any day of the week. This is probably because when I was little, we had a shepherd.

Re: what is your pet worth
i love german shepards, in my family we call them old stations , and my new gran used to breed dobies. my fave's are staffies though. i grew up with one on the farm. best dog in the world, and loyal as hell. it would let us kids do the most abomnible things to it (i used to pretend he was a horse) and not even a glare, but let anyone look at us... i miss him.

Re: what is your pet worth
And that's why I love Belgian and german sheperds too. Although their end by lower leg paralysis is not the nicest thing to see (I've heard new bred don't have the dismorphy responsible of it).
In general, I love big dogs. Well trained in a loving family, they're among the greatest companions in the world.
No chihuahua, yorkshire or other pocket dogs for me.

Re: what is your pet worth
Our shepherd - his name was Prince, as his mother was Queen and his father was King  - was the sweetest thing. Wouldn't hurt a fly, but he regularly put huge guys back in their cars when they'd come to see my dad. He'd stand there and bark and bark and sound all vicious, but all the time his tail would be wagging like everything, and he was really just barking because he was glad to see them. It was good that they thought different, though.
Prince was a little jealous of me, though, because my parents had him before they had me. When I was little and my dad would have me out in the yard playing, the dog would take it just so long before he would come and gently nudge me out of the way so that he could get a little bit of attention, as well. Just a little bit of interspecies sibling rivalry.

I had a sherperd (a Belgian one) as older bro too, except that he was an outside dog. But no jealousy at all, I used to go with him in his doghouse when I or him did something wrong. And my parents could call us, none of us would answer.
Contrary to your Prince, he had teeth and knew how to use it. Some robber who tried to steal my grand-dad wallet's has less flesh in the butt to remind it. And he never bark to strangers who enter the house, but would have never let them out without one of us giving him the signal for it.

Re: what is your pet worth
I do think she's gone overboard, and I've never gone and wouldn't go that far but I've spent quite a bit on mine...
We adopted a stray off the street, she is a mutt - part lab part pit bull. One week after we got her she ruined all the carpets in the house by becoming violently ill. We discovered she had parvo which is a dog disease that most get vaccinated for as puppies because it can be fatal (I think the stats say about 75% these days). Hubby and I argued about taking her to the vet. He was afraid she'd die anyway and we didn't have a lot of 'disposable' income at that time (not like we have it now either...) but I persevered and we took her in. She was deathly ill for 8 days. The vet didn't think she'd make it. My husband, my roommate and their employer (a family friend) visited her in the vet hospital and she perked up immediately. Two days later she was home. Still on lots of medicine and vitamins but alive and out of danger. It cost us about $1500. Several months later she almost drowned and we had to take her in again to have her lungs checked for water. Another $100 (these things happen on the weekends and regular vet offices aren't open then so you have to go the 'emergency' vet and they cost three times as much). Several months after that, she accidentally ate a Tylenol (which, coincidentally, is highly poisenous to dogs). Almost died again. $400 later she's home and healthy again. We call her our $2000 stray.
Knock on wood, she's happy and healthy these days.
