My current dog, Kaiser (not the most original I know) is a Shepard, Belgian cross German and he' an absolutely brilliant pet, one of those animals with so much personality and a strange mix of very intelligent and still a bit doppy, although my friends have nicknames like horse and dinasour for him I still call him 'the puppy'. He was easily excited as a puppy but has mellowed really well. We made sure we did plenty of training with him and he's a great excuse for a daily walk down the beach. He's only 6 now but so far no problems with his back and hips, so we have our fingures crossed for him.

Don't expect them since at least a good 6 more years. My own started to have small problems there when he was 14 and was almost completly paralyzed in his 17, yet it was 20 years ago and vet medecine has improved since then.

Actually, much of their normal hip and back problems can be caused by displasia (another thing which has affected my nine-lived dog) and our vet prescribed a chromium pill (like we can take for our joints) that was formulated for dogs of her size (50-60 lbs). It was terribly expensive but it actually cured her hip problem. She doesn't take them anymore, not even as a maintenence thing and her hip is just as good as new (well, it wasn't good when it was new but you get the idea). So, if you see any limping at all, check with your vet about that stuff - catch it early on and you might be able to avoid the major problems later.

Thanks for the info, I'll keep it in mind for the day I'll have garden and time to take care of a sheperd dog again. And I'll pass it along to my father. The end of our previous dog from this hip problem was so sorrowful he never had one again. And I know he miss a dog company.

Well, I rescued Tigger after she'd been abandoned, but I can't really put a price on her.

AHEM!

Ah yes, and I wouldn't swap Freda for the world.
