i know i loved garp, though the film left so much to be desired, the book was kooky enough to satisfy my love of the bizare. i've not been able to get into his other stuff, i felt it was bizare for the sake of it rather than as part of the characters. i'll have to give this one a whirl.

Never saw any of the movies adapted. If you loved Garp, start with either The Hotel New Hampshire or the Water-Method man.

Seen his stuff in the shelves, felt curious, never ventured. Tell me why I should?

'cos it's bizarre, fun, full of nonsense and yet down-to-earth ? And on the whole, always a good read - even if some of his novels are far better than others.

Well, all those descriptors certainly whet the appetite, as does your endorsement. Where should one start?

JP...I'd start with Garp, because it is a classic. It's absurd, it's sweet, it's outrageous. Just watch out for the gradual students.

Thanks! I'll try and pick that up in the next acquisition expedition, then.

problem i had with garp was that after reading it i went looking for Jenny Field's book! I swear, the characters are so lifelike, it felt autobiographical. JP, it is worth reading. in fact, i think i'm gonna get it out and read it again. it's one of those that didn't survive the move from africa. sigh.
