Life underwater, present and future
Deep inside the ocean another world evolves and has its own issues for survival. And those who populate this world don't care about the creatures outside the ocean. A small fish is always concerned about the place where it can find the food and how to hide from his enemy, the bigger fish. The enemy of the small fish has the same struggles every day with a bigger one. The fight for survival, all into a strange garden with no real gardener.
And what happens if one day, the human has to move into this world ? Do you think he will build cities underwater and made himself the Master ? Can we really survive underwater ?

Re: Life underwater, present and future
to survive and master the water, we'd need gills, or else we'd always be vulnerable because of our dependance on oxygen.

That can be arranged. If they were able to make tunnels underwater and made the transport possible between two islands, they should be able to do more than that. Who knows ? Maybe one day we'll have underwater cities.

Re: Life underwater, present and future
the problem is, without gills, if the tunnels collapsed or flooded, there'd be trouble.

The astronauts cannot go out in space without a costume. The diving suit it's easier to put on.
And gills could me make available everywhere, in special places for the security of people.

Re: Life underwater, present and future
I would think pressure is going to be the big issue. Especially if it's a case of having to move underwater, which will probably mean having to go deep under the surface. Imagine if a material is ever developed that is so strong that self contained structures can be created to withstand pressure deep under water, possibly break off the seabed in the chance of an earth quake (although you'd hope that they'd place them in areas where earthquakes would be unlikely :smilie and either rise or remain tethered just above the sea floor.
Not likely anytime soon, but a fun idea.

You can die easily on earth and underwater. Danger is everywhere. On earth we have hurricanes, earthquakes and volcanos. Underwater we have earthquakes. As long as the construction is well isolated, I don't see the problem.

Re: Life underwater, present and future
Problems to solve :
Oxygen - gills, isolated cities, whatever...
Pressure - unless we live close to the coast, we'll have to develop not only material able to support the pressure, but a way to support it ourselves both physically and emotionnaly
Sea occupants - We don't know most of the deep sea inhabitants right now. what would we do if a kraken attack the city ?
Could find a solution to both of them but it'll takes a lot of time and money. Would be easier to start with floating cities.
