The Film Festival from Montréal ( Aug 26- Sep 5) reserves us an explosive movie: Karla. For those who have read the news about the release of Karla Homolka from prison not long ago, here you have a Hollywood production, exploring the life of Karla.

TORONTO (CP) - The Montreal World Film Festival is exploiting the memory of Karla Homolka's schoolgirl victims by screening a controversial Hollywood movie chronicling her crimes, the lawyer for the victims' families said Tuesday.
"We see this as being extremely exploitive and sensational," said Tim Danson of the festival's decision to host the international debut of the film Karla. "I think that is to exploit my clients' misery for (the festival's) own personal end. This is not the kind of film that you would normally anticipate to be at a film festival."

"In the end, the viewer is left to ponder their sympathy for Karla, to ask how much she too is a victim of Paul," reads the plot synopsis. It further describes Homolka, who is believed to be living in Montreal, as "conflicted by her conscience but still unable to escape" Bernardo's grasp.

That's just rubbing the families nose into their grief again

It'd be as if someone did a film documenting the child killer Myra Hindley - not pleasant.
I sometimes wonder about the motivations behind these sort of productions

Money, of course. The real Karla has to present herself in September for her release conditions. The victims families are still angry she got only 12 years of prison.

The days are long gone when Life Imprisonment meant what it says on the tin

I notice in this case she copped a plea bargain against her husband? So that's why she got a reduced sentence. You have to ask why the Police didn't feel they could have got a conviction without it.

I must admit her husband is very persuasive and knew how to cover his traces. He was never suspected for the rapes in the bus station. And probably if he didn't start to beat her, they'll both be free and unpunished.

Yes, she got a very good bargain. I understand her lawers tried to help her, but 12 years for 3 crimes is really not enough.
