Re: Mystery, thriller and crime story
My favorite is Mary Higgins Clark. And forever Agatha Christie.
I have "For the sake of Helena", by Elizabeth George on my summer list for the moment.

Re: Mystery, thriller and crime story
For my part, no matter how I'm fond of Agatha Christie (I've read most of her books, even the spy ones), I prefer crime and cop story to mystery books, as the one wrotten be Elmore Leonard, Dashiell Hammet, Chester Himes and James Ellroy. In fact I'm a big fan of noir novels and films.
Spy novel and thriller ala John Grisham or Tom Clancy are not my favorite, but I really enjoy them in summer, lazying on the beach. Currently reading the Janson directive by Robert Ludlum.

Re: Mystery, thriller and crime story
personally, i find grishom a bit dry and clancey a bit to 'been there done that got the t-shirt'
i'd rather read something well crafted and/or funny

Re: Mystery, thriller and crime story
Definitely James Ellroy.* Amazing writer, if you have the stomach for his material.* Jonathan Kellerman is very good but his wife, Faye Kellerman, is even better.* Stephen White writes a good series about a therapist in Colorado who also solves crimes.* I've always really liked Robert B. Parker's "Spenser" novels, but I'm warning you that you'll get hungry if you read them - lots of food preparation scenes as a background for discussions about the crimes being solved.* Tony Hillerman writes about tribal policemen Joe Leaphorn, an Indian with an anthropology degree and Jim Chee, who besides being a cop is also learning to be a healer, in a series of very good books, some of which have been turned into movies for PBS in the States.* Kathy Reichs writes about a forensic anthropologist who divides her time between Canada and the southern US.* Patricia Cornwell is also very good.

Re: Mystery, thriller and crime story
Patricia Cornwell is a good one, but I was unimpressed by her last work with Scarpetta. Story is starting to be redundant and not focused anymore in the thriller

Re: Mystery, thriller and crime story
Just read one of this new trend, and found it good but not great.
