Yes the list is in tne order they should be read. You really need to read them in order because although the mystery itself is unique to each book the life of the detective as well the background history of the times, is a running thread.

Read the last Vargas available : Dans les bois eternels.

Learnt she has some books translated in English :
Have Mercy on Us All (Pars vite et reviens tard), The Harvill Press, 2003, ISBN 0743284011
Seeking Whom He May Devour (L’Homme à l’envers), The Harvill Press, 2004, ISBN 1843430908
The Three Evangelists (Debout les morts), Harvill Secker, 2006 ISBN 1843430908.
Wash This Blood Clean From My Hand (Sous les vents de Neptune), Harvill Secker, 2007, ISBN 1843432730

The Three Evangelists (Debout les morts) is the best in this list and a must-read.

I'm currently reading a translation of Le Fantôme de l'opéra by Gaston Leroux (I have it in English because my French is very weak. )
