what is art

i'm not asking about whether or not conceptual art (tracey shudder emon) is in fact art. i'm asking rather what constitutes art and why.
my own belief is that anything that is beautiful and well done is art. for me that would not only include the traditional painting, drawing, poetry, sculpture and creative writing, but also a well crafted piece of furniture, a well made computer program, even a message board. there is a certain beauty to a thing well made or well done. to me that can also be an art form. but i'm not really in a postion to know. i'm starting to study the subject (skimming the surface) in october. but i'd appreciate the view of others as well.

I'm afraid I'm too "terre à terre", in other words practical. I like all those creations close to the nature. I can look all day long to a Picasso and not connect with it at all.

For me, art start when an object is manufactured just for its beauty without real utility, or when his design take into account beauty too.
Now, what is beauty is another question.

I thought painters or sculptures try to express some idea with their works. And not all of them can pass their message to the others.

i don't mind 'art' in that sense, what confuses me is this conceptual nonsense! which has no beauty, shows little creativity and doesn't last longer than it takes to make a bed!
