Re: what is art
Call me a Philistine but I've always seen art as another form of communication (whether it be a transfer pure aesthetics to the viewer or a specific idea).
I see it in the same communicationary sense as language, music etc. What I've never understood about some art is where the artist actually has to explain what his art is about.
I've been to a few exhibitions (I have a few artist friends that insist on trying to 'educate' me) and have made a fool of myself more than once so I'm certainly no expert on the subject. My final word - I don't like art if I just don't 'get it'.

Re: what is art
Another interest is that true art is more than the artist meaning. A good book, paint and even more music, brings very personal association to the audience. Some its creator didn't even thinked of...

Re: what is art
You know, there is the theory that art is whatever you can get away with. I've always kind of liked that, in the sense that it allows art to be anything. It doesn't necessarily mean that art is anything any random person says it is, but it does open it past very traditional, orthodox art forms such as representational painting and sculpture and orchestral music, the sorts of things that most people automatically think of when the word "art" is mentioned. It has always bothered me that so many folks (anyway the ones I know) who have the idea that if they don't like it (whatever "it" is), it isn't art at all.
I probably have some more thoughts on this, but it is way too early in the morning to be awake, much less be thinking. I'm only up now because I had to take a friend to work today because her car isn't working. She had to be there by 6:30. *Yawn*

Re: what is art
There is an artist in the UK that creates 'art' by keying cars and then taking photographs for his display (he is always very careful never to reveal the number plate of the vehicle...the coward!)
He calls it art. I think he's an idiot.
If he did that to my car I'd punch his lights out and call it criticism

Re: what is art
Foxbat...as far as I can see, that's not art, that's vandalism. Idiot probably thinks he's a performance artist or some such idiocy. Now real art would be to put him to work repairing all the cars he's damaged.

A fine point indeed
This particular 'artist' seems to think that because he calls it art then it must be art.
So what do other people think? Does something become a work of art just because the creator says so?
