Re: ID Cards
Well, India faces more actual attacks per year from Islamic terrorists than any European country I know of. The West has to get a grip!!!

Re: ID Cards
Well, having a Tory government for 18 years will tend to break the economy...
No, really, I don't know. I think its just a way to finance other parts of the governmental plans for the next couple of years...

I know.
But franckly, we're not that paranoids. We suffered some islamic attacks, some other form of terrorism (IRA for UK, britton (sp?), basque or corse nationalist here), and the usual random loony, so we take a few precautions. But people are not especially afraid.
But ID card has not for sole purpose to prevent terrorism. Prevent identity fraud and illegal immigration are much bigger issues.

Re: ID Cards
Yeah, well, that would seem to be the case, and also would also help governments that seem to be tackling terrorism to stay in power, because they can say "Look! Since we have come to power, we've not been attacked by any terrorist organisation!"

Re: ID Cards
An ID card is a good thing & people should carry them at all times. After all, if you've got nothing to hide, where's the problem?
I'm all for giving the Govt / Police/ military the powers they need to keep me safe. I would have no objection to the Police having random search powers - 10 seconds out of my day to increase my safety is a small price. If you complain about your civil liberties being breached, then don't whinge when you are stabbed, shot etc by the armed robber whose weapons was not discovered by the Police because this criminal has civil liberties. As it stands, the Police have to wait for the criminal to use the weapon as they don't know he has it. Increase their powers & they may be able to PREVENT the crime. The price - your "civil liberties". I'll pay it gladly - the only people who benefit from the current system are the CRIMINALS. Are people so arrogant that they think they are so important that they will be targeted if the authorities had increased powers? There would be a reason to target someone, and being Joe Average isn't it.
When I was a teenager, I was dragged out of a car at gunpoint by the Police, thrown against the hood, had my arms bent in interesting angles & was thoroughly searched. Afterwards, they explained the same model car I was in had committed an armed robbery just down the road where a gun was produced & they were not going to take any chances. I don't blame them. I THANKED them for doing a good job & had a great story to tell.
And a special hello to all the new friends I've made amongst the bleeding hearts...

Re: ID Cards
Ashen, so this police action on you, because of the car, would have happened whether you had an ID card or not.
ID cards exist already for those registered as asylum seekers. Those that want to go missing and Immigration cannot find them. Cards are stolen because they are used to collect benefit from the Post Office. Those innocents who lose them have to wait 2 months for a replacement. There is no evidence whatsoever that those who want to get involved in terrorism would be caught by an ID card system.
An all-in-one card is dangerous because of the lost/stolen element. The cost of replacement is borne by whom? I had an ID card in the Armed Forces for years and lost it once. I was charged 2 days pay. Never happen in civvy street? Maybe.
Now the cost of the scheme itself is coming to light and more people are questioning the idea in practical terms. Someone prove the terrorism case to me and I will change my mind otherwise I don’t want it.

Re: ID Cards
I've no problem with carrying an I.D card, although I do object to the price.
Terrorism I don't even think about, the government's leaflet on what to do in a terrorist attack was assigned to the dustbin without even being opened.
